Toronto Film School’s acting program came to me for the design of their digital and print promotional materials for their Spring 2026 play: A Midsummer Night’s…Romp! A Toronto-based, modern twist on the Shakespearian classic, the play explored themes of love, revenge, lightness vs. darkness, magic and transformation. The Director as well as the head of the TFS acting program needed promotional materials that conveyed the romantic, mischievous mood with alluded to the modernised play’s setting.
The design used for the social media post, digital brochure and both print and digital posters is inspired by the psychological Rorschach test which uses symmetrical ink blots to glimpse at a person’s perception of reality, their emotional reactivity and concealed thoughts. This alludes to the play’s imaginative nature and the complexity of the human emotions and relationships which feature prominently in its tale.
The composition plays with the viewer’s mind and invites them to see and interpret different things beyond the more evident figures. This, combined with the all-caps retro typeface creates an enigmatic, mischievous effect. The colour palette evokes a dreamy, passionate, and enchanting atmosphere while the visual elements allude to the dualities of urban and organic as well as human and supernatural within the play.
